Veterans' races for sprinters could become a real crowd-pleaser
There is no doubting what the highlight is on Saturday, and this year’s Cazoo Derby promises to be intriguingly competitive with a range of trainers represented towards the head of the market. With just three of the 12 runners coming from Ireland, a British-based trainer may even win a major race. However, let’s not overlook another contest on Epsom’s card, the World Pool ‘Dash’.
With four of the last five winners of this valuable sprint heritage handicap aged six or older, the race is very much one for the golden oldies, and it would be fantastic if Caspian Prince could land a remarkable fourth Dash win at the age of 12. And there are two more 12-year-olds in the field – 2013 winner Duke Of Firenze and Pettochside, who has even bagged the lucky berth in stall one.
The Dash is great in showcasing these grand old sprinters, and its slot on one of the most important Flat days of the year can only help to enhance the engagement between spectator and thoroughbred.
