It may be difficult to believe now but there was a time not too long ago that the viability of racing at Goodwood was far from certain.

That the course continues to thrive as one of the jewels of European racing is down in part to the work begun by the 10th Duke of Richmond and Gordon, whose family own Goodwood and who died last week.

In one interview the duke said the modernisation of the racecourse, which began with the opening of the new March Stand in 1980, was "the achievement of which I am most proud".
