Barry Geraghty: nonchalance and charisma illuminated the era of jumps galacticos
Richard Forristal pays tribute to one of the greatest in a golden generation
It's a mark of the golden era in which Barry Geraghty existed that you could reflect on a career as laden with prestige as his and still conclude that he had to some degree lived in the shadows of others.
Geraghty is one of only two riders to break a century of Grade 1 winners. That is a deeply illustrious record, but it might have generated a little more reverence if Ruby Walsh, the only jump jockey to ride more than him, hadn't shared the same orbit.
Likewise, Sir Anthony McCoy's singular feats demanded widespread acclaim, so Messrs McCoy and Walsh were widely heralded as the most decorated riders to grace the pugilistic realm of modern jump racing. They were all that, and they were deserving of their status as media darlings, but Geraghty's place in the pantheon of all-time greats is no less assured.
