Waller: Winx has come out of Warwick Stakes better than ever

Fans of superstar mare Winx may have been watching her sensational last-to-first success in the Warwick Stakes on Saturday from behind the sofa, but the dramatic victory has not had an impact on the dual Cox Plate winner, with trainer Chris Waller saying: “It’s the best I’ve seen her pull up.”

Winx gifted her opponents a four-length start at Randwick after being slowly away, but pounced late in a stirring finish to extend her unbeaten run to 18 races.

Winx’s ever-growing fanbase will not have to wait long to see her back in action, with Waller eyeing a return to the same track for the Chelmsford Stakes on September 2.

Waller said: “I saw her 20 minutes after the race and you wouldn't have known she'd have gone around. It's the best I've ever seen her pull up.

“Normally she'd get on her toes and sweat up quite a bit, to the point where I don't let them put the sponsor's rug on her, but she was fine.

“I'll probably stay on top of her and run her in two weeks, because you don't want to start missing runs and all of a sudden there's a problem in the barriers and you have to trial.

“It's just one run at a time and we want her in the Cox Plate in the best possible condition and the right outcome at the end.”

Waller feels Winx is “probably the only horse” that could overcome the circumstances that transpired against her.

“We see a lot of races, we've seen everything happen, and you just hope that it doesn't happen to your better horses in your big races, because things like this take place,” he told RSN 927's Correct Weight.

“She's probably the only one horse that can overcome it.

“There are times where you can catch up when you miss the start if there's no pressure on, but on a day when they were running so quick, running track records on a lightning fast track, it made it a little bit harder.

“So apart from not thinking anything else and just hoping she could finish the race off, it was such a relief she didn't let the punters down.”
