Rider Daniel Schmitt charged following betting activity

Daniel Schmitt: faces of charge of 71 bets placed over two and a half years
Daniel Schmitt: faces charge over 71 bets placed during two-and-a-half-years

Australian jockey Daniel Schmitt is set to face a charge over 71 bets placed across a two-and-a-half-year period.

Racing Victoria stewards issued one charge against Schmitt following an investigation into a number of bets placed by him on thoroughbred races between January 2016 and September 2018.

Schmitt has been charged with breaching AR 115(1)(c) of the Australian Rules of Racing which states:

A jockey or apprentice jockey must not: (c) bet, or have any interest in a bet, or facilitate a bet on any race.

Just last month, apprentice jockey Chris Caserta was charged with having six bets on thoroughbred racing.

RV stewards allege that Schmitt made, and/or facilitated and/or had an interest in the making of, 71 bets on thoroughbred races between January 2016 and September 2018, with the bets placed totalling $2,050 (£1,095).

None of the 71 bets placed were on races Schmitt rode in. The charge issued against him will be heard by the Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board on a date to be fixed.

It is not the first time Schmitt has been in trouble with racing officials. In 2005 he was suspended for nine months for giving false evidence in an inquiry and then in 2015 he was forced to write apologies to two Australian Football League players and then chief steward Terry Bailey for offensive tweets.
