King Malpic picks off Inns Of Court late under ice-cool Peslier in Ris-Orangis
A 5lb penalty and an opposing tandem at the top of their form proved too much for Inns of Court as King Malpic and a patient Olivier Peslier claimed the spoils in a reverse of last season's one-two in the Group 3 Prix de Ris-Orangis.
Mickael Barzalona grabbed the rail and kicked Inns Of Court into an early lead, a move which looked likely to pay off until inside the final furlong.
First Hackney Road and then Gold Vibe were beaten off but the sight of a motionless Peslier on the favourite's shoulder was enough to spell imminent defeat for Inns Of Court.
Owner Emilie Lafeu was delighted with King Malpic, who split Hey Gaman and Polydream over seven furlongs at Longchamp on his most recent outing.
"We have had him since he was a yearling and he has had some real physical problems down the years, so this is reward for a real team effort," said Lafeu. "He took a time to come to himself this year but that was him at his best.
"We'll head now for the Maurice de Gheest and I think he is a horse that is better on a straight track and who thrives off a strong pace."
The first two are likely to meet again as connections of Inns Of Court are also eyeing the Group 1 Prix Maurice de Gheest over six and a half furlongs at Deauville, a race identified by Martyn Meade as a potential next step for July Cup runner-up Advertise earlier in the day.
