Hugh Bowman facing questions after horror fall leaves rider in hospital
Jockey Andrew Adkins has had surgery following Saturday's horror fall at Rosehill – an incident that left top jockey Hugh Bowman under scrutiny for his race-riding manoeuvre.
Adkins was aboard Hot 'N' Hazy when the colt fell and suffered fatal injuries.
The rider, who won the Group 1 Coolmore Classic on Daysee Doom in 2018, was rushed to Westmead Hospital in Sydney but his surgery was delayed a day because of other emergencies.
The 22-year-old had a rod put in his tibia and a plate in his clavicle, while he also had his chest drained after his lung collapsed due to his fractured ribs.
Adkins will now be going into a high dependency ward for close monitoring over the next two days.
Bowman, well known for his association with the legendary Winx, rode the race's winner Smart Image and was among four riders questioned by stewards in an inquiry, which has been adjourned to allow Adkins to give evidence.
"A post-race veterinary examination revealed Hot 'N' Hazy to have sustained a catastrophic injury to its near-foreleg and the colt was euthanised," read the stewards' report.
Adkins, who had his first ride in 2013 and has partnered nearly 300 winners, was off for four months last year after another crunching fall when he broke bones in his back, cheek and nose.
