Group 1-winning jockey banned for three years after betting on his own rides
Jockey Adam Hyeronimus has been disqualified for three years for betting related offences after Racing NSW stewards concluded an inquiry on Tuesday.
The 30-year-old received more than the mandatory two-year penalty for a breach of betting rules while his cousin, stablehand Blake Paine, received two years and four months.
The ban for Hyeronimus is effective immediately which means he will not be able to ride at Canterbury on Wednesday.
Hyeronimus is able to appeal the decision and can continue to ride under a stay of proceedings until that appeal is heard.
Stewards found that Hyeronimus placed two separate $500 bets on horses he rode – Lucky Meteor, who finished third at Canterbury in November 2016, and Limbo Soul, who won on debut at Rosehill in February 2017. Limbo Soul was backed from $26 with TAB to start $3.20 favourite in her two-year-old fillies' maiden over 1100 metres and won by three and a quarter lengths.
The Sydney-based jockey, who won the top-level Vinery Stud Stakes on Shout The Bar in March, was also found guilty on another 28 charges relating to bets on thoroughbred races in which he did not ride over a three-year period between 2016 and 2019.
When the hearing convened in July, stewards cited evidence – including text message exchanges and bank transfers between Hyeronimus and Paine – which indicated the jockey had asked Paine to place the bets on his behalf.
The bets placed included win, place, quinella and multi bets which mostly totalled between $200 and $1000.
