Goldikova's daughter Terrakova too strong as Treve's sister disappoints

Terrakova won the battle of the well-related fillies in the Prix Cleopatra at Saint-Cloud on Tuesday, knuckling down well to beat off seven rivals including Treve's sister Terre, who could finish only seventh after her tongue slipped over the bit.

Terre set the pace but was pushed along two furlongs out and faded. Terrakova, in contrast, kept on well to earn a 6-1 (from 16) quote from Paddy Power for the Prix de Diane on June 18.

For the winning connections – owners the Wertheimers, trainer Freddy Head and jockey Maxime Guyon – it was a particularly pleasing victory coming a day after stable stalwart Solow was revealed to have been retired.

Terrakova, by Galileo out of Goldikova, is now two from two, having won her only start as a juvenile last November, and appears to have more stamina than her celebrated mother, who could finish only third in the Diane behind Zarkava in 2008.

Terrakova won by three-quarters of a length from Panthelia, with Penny Lane third, and deserves extra credit after meeting trouble in running twice during the extended mile and a quarter contest.

Head said: "She handled it all very well because Maxime had to get after her early on to keep his place and sometimes that can light them up, but she relaxed well.

"Then she had a little difficulty finding a gap, but once it opened up and Maxime gave her a crack she really took off. She'll run in the Prix de Diane."

Head's sister, Criquette Head-Maarek, was left frustrated after Terre was unable to conclusively prove whether she deserves her place in the Diane, a race won in devastating fashion by sister Treve four years ago.

"That was too bad to be true," said the trainer. "She got her tongue over the bit and couldn't breathe so I don't know any more than I did before. I'll take her home and see how she is before deciding where she runs next."

Also at Saint-Cloud

Armande gained perhaps overdue Group race success in the Prix Corrida, bursting clear of her field under Pierre-Charles Boudot turning in and then running on well to hold the late charge of That Which Is Not, with the Luca Cumani-trained Rosental fourth.

The Pia Brandt-trained Called To The Bar won the Group 3 Prix du Lys, a trial for the Grand Prix de Paris.

As a gelding Called To The Bar will not be able to attempt to follow up in the Grand Prix - a race Brandt won last year with Mont Ormel - but could instead be considered for the King Edward VII Stakes at Ascot, a race for which he would need to be supplemented.
