Saturday: Belmont Park

Frankie Dettori was out of luck at Belmont Park on Saturday as his two rides at the New York track, Nations Pride and With The Moonlight, finished second in the Belmont Derby and Oaks.

The Charlie Appleby-trained Nations Pride was beaten three-quarters of a length by shock winner Classic Causeway in the Belmont Derby, while stablemate With The Moonlight was headed by Mckulick in the final stages of the Belmont Oaks and beaten a length and three-quarters.

Nations Pride – who was sent off 12-5 favourite despite finishing eighth in the Derby at Epsom previously – challenged wide coming into the home straight but could not reel in Classic Causeway, who was racing on turf for the first time for trainer Kenny McPeek.

The trainer, quoted by Bloodhorse, said: "After his last run I had dinner with the owners and I told them at some point they have to try turf. He has a foot like a pancake.

"He has a big turf foot on him and his sire [Giant's Causeway] was a top grass horse in Europe. I felt over the mile and a quarter [on turf] no-one would test him like they do in those dirt races in the spring."

The Aidan O'Brien-trained Stone Age finished third, while Royal Patronage – having his final run for Charlie and Mark Johnston before continuing his career in the US – was fifth.

With The Moonlight bounced back to form having finished last of 11 in the Oaks at Epsom, while McKulick provided trainer Chad Brown with a sixth victory in the race.

He said: "She was born to run a mile and a quarter. We’ve been waiting for a long time to run her this far and we had this race picked out as her main target of the season.

"She’s special and she finally got enough room to fully utilise that closing kick she has."

Ballydoyle's Concert Hall could manage only fourth under Ryan Moore despite being sent off favourite, while the Joseph O'Brien-trained Agartha was last of the ten runners.
