Fabre expects better from Arc fourth Waldgeist as first raiders arrive for Vase
Waldgeist, no match for the mighty Enable on his last two starts, should relish conditions at Sha Tin for next week's Longines Hong Kong Vase, according to his master trainer Andre Fabre.
A son of Galileo who runs in the colours Gestut Ammerland and Newsells Park, Waldgeist impressed in the Prix Foy and finished a creditable fourth in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, but was a well-beaten fifth in the Breeders' Cup Turf last time.
However, he is the general 7-2 favourite to bounce back in the Vase, which Fabre has won with Borgia (1999) and Flintshire (2014).
"I was a bit disappointed with him in America, where he ran a bit flat and didn't quicken as usual," said Fabre, who will also be represented in the Longines Hong Kong Mile by Inns Of Court.
"But now he has recovered really well and he will enjoy Sha Tin racecourse and the fast ground."
Waldgeist's rivals in the HK$20 (£2m/€2.2) million event include Irish Derby winner Latrobe, Melbourne Cup third Prince Of Arran and Red Verdon, who was last seen finishing down the field in the Caulfield Cup.
They arrived at Sha Tin on Monday and the Joseph O'Brien-trained Latrobe stretched his legs at the track on Tuesday morning.
