Deauville riches on Dunlop's radar after he is granted stables at track

Harry Dunlop, whose raids across the Channel have yielded the biggest successes of his career, hopes to plunder some more euros at Deauville next month after being granted four boxes at the track by France Galop.

Lambourn-based Dunlop has been a regular visitor to France, largely because of the bonuses on offer to French-bred horses.

That policy paid off in great style when Robin Of Navan won the Group 1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud in 2015 and the trainer's stable star is on the Deaville teamsheet, with the Prix Gontaut-Biron on August 15 his target.

He is likely to travel over for that race but Mafeking and Rock On Dandy are among those who will be based out there.

"We've got about six horses who are French-bred - some of them two-year-olds, some of them older - and we have boxes at Deauville, so will alternate bringing them over for the big August meeting there," said Dunlop.

"You can run at Deauville or Clairefontaine and come home if required. Deauville's an amazing meeting, really fun. The sales are on, there's good food, good weather - owners enjoy it. It's something we've tried to target and having horses there for a month is good sport, so that's why I've applied for some boxes and we've got some.

"Naturally the other trainers there have a lot of stables taken, so you slightly get what you're given, but if we want to there are boxes at Clairefontaine, which is just a mile down the road if you wanted to take more. It's just nice to have a base there.

"It will make things a lot easier, especially with two-year-olds, who you could run the next week without having to come back to England."

Fine food and nice weather are not the only attractions for Dunlop, who reckons he has saddled around ten winners in France. He ruled out any permanent relocation, but will continue to target those bonuses.

"That's something we've always done," he added. "We enjoy doing it and I think we've accrued €250,000, with Robin Of Navan bringing the majority of it.

"It's good money, but we like to try to combine both [running in France and Britain]. If you win a €10,000 maiden on top of that you get a 64 per cent bonus because you're French-bred, and that's key.

"When Robin Of Navan was second in the Prix d'Ispahan he cleared about €92,000, which was about €60,000 for finishing second and €32,000 for premiums. It's a lot of money."
