Saint Are receiving treatment after veteran is brought down at Chair

Aintree stalwart Saint Are was receiving veterinary treatment at the racecourse on Saturday evening following a Randox Health Grand National in which all other runners returned largely unscathed.

The Tom George-trained veteran, previously second and third in the race, was brought down at the Chair during a race in which 13 horses parted company with their jockeys.

Milansbar and Seeyouatmidnight both finished lame, while Anibale Fly, Carlingford Lough and Raz De Maree suffered from post-race heat stress.

BHA spokesman Robin Mounsey said: "Saint Are is being assessed and receiving treatment in the racecourse stables. No news is expected on his condition for some time."

Becher's Brook was bypassed on the second circuit as Charlie Deutsch was being treated behind screens having been hurt when Houblon Des Obeaux fell there first time around.

The horse's trainer Venetia Williams said: "Charlie is quite sore as he got kicked about five yards by a following horse after falling at Becher's.

"He didn't ride in the last race but hopefully it's just bruising. He's due to ride on Sunday at Plumpton but we'll have to see how he is in the morning."

Danny Cook, whose mount I Just Know fell at Becher's Brook on the first circuit when leading, was seen waving jockeys around the fence. This led to a stewards' inquiry, at which Cook "was reminded of his responsibilities to not become involved in these procedures".

Thirty-eight went to post for the race, with Regal Encore, due to his blood analysis being abnormal, and original reserve Walk In The Mill, who was lame, non-runners.
