Two years ago Dermot Weld reached the summit, the Everest of his training career, when he won the Investec Derby with the Aga Khan-owned Harzand.

Such sparse detail ignores the attendant drama, since it was very nearly a case of returning to base camp when Harzand spread a plate on the morning of the race.

The son of 2009 Derby winner Sea The Stars received intensive treatment and spent several hours in a racecourse stable with the injured foot in a bucket of ice before Weld gave the final go-ahead, with the proviso that he should be withdrawn if showing any hint of lameness at the start.
