Three names to note on day two of the Craven meeting at Newmarket

Wednesday’s card at Newmarket features the first of the recognised Guineas trials in Britain in the Group 3 Nell Gwyn Stakes. There is also the European Free Handicap for the Classic generation and the Group 3 Earl Of Sefton Stakes for older horses. Here are three runners on the card looking to make the headlines . . .

The day after stablemate Harry Angel lifted the Sprint Cup at Haydock last September, Snazzy Jazzy was collecting almost the same in prize-money for landing a lucrative sales race in Ireland and makes his first start since in the Free Handicap.

Speed looked to be his strong suit when unbeaten in three starts as a juvenile last season, although his final start was over an extended 6f and this first try at 7f could well be within his range.

Although without a 2,000 Guineas entry, the French equivalent was mentioned as a possible big-race target by Clive Cox in his Racing Post Stable Tour and no doubt his comeback run will help shape his season.

bet365 Earl Of Sefton Stakes (3.00)

The highest-rated horse on show at Newmarket on Wednesday, Deauville makes his first start in Britain or Ireland since finishing runner-up at Leopardstown in July.

Since then he has been campaigned at the highest level across the globe, running in America, Canada and Hong Kong.

His usual consistency had deserted him on his last two runs but with a clear advantage in the ratings, the Earl Of Sefton looks an ideal starting point for what will no doubt be another globetrotting season for the five-year-old.

Altyn Orda
Lanwades Stud Nell Gwyn Stakes (3.35)

Last year’s Nell Gwyn winner Daban went on to finish an honourable third in the Qipco 1,000 Guineas and at 20-1 for the first of the fillies’ Classics, Altyn Orda will be looking to advertise her Guineas claims for Roger Varian and Silvestre de Sousa.

Winning the Group 3 Oh So Sharp Stakes at Newmarket last season was a noteworthy performance, especially considering she got loose on the way to the start, raced on her own and wandered under pressure, and she looks an exciting prospect for the season.
