Among the many faces lost to racing in 2018, perhaps the name with the greatest legacy is that of John Dunlop, who died in July at the age of 78.

The tributes paid to him testified to his personal qualities as much as his skill with horses, and "gentleman" was a common description.

During a 47-year career at Castle Stables, Arundel, Dunlop was champion trainer in 1995 and won 3,277 races in Britain, plus about 300 abroad.
