A humble family man, but oh so determined. That is the impression given by jockey PJ McDonald as he reflects on a memorable year.

On course, for his best season yet, the man born Patrick Joseph added another feather to his cap when he was crowned top rider at Glorious Goodwood, and it is achievements like that which keep the fire in the rider's belly burning brighter than ever.

"To come out on top of Frankie Dettori and James Doyle, I got a nice kick out of that," he says. "All I want is to be riding at the big meetings and on horses who can compete. If you're there, you're busy and you've got a chance, that's what it's all about."
