The build-up to next month's Qipco-sponsored 1,000 and 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket is getting interesting with the trials giving us a better idea whether the three-year-olds involved have trained on from their juvenile campaigns and are likely to step up as serious contenders for the first Classics.

Recent trends tell us that in these trials we should pay closer attention to the fillies. A statistic hard to ignore is that nine of the last 12 winners of 2,000 Guineas were running for the first time aged three. By contrast, eight of the last 12 winners of the 1,000 Guineas had a prep race.
