Football League vows to protect 'vital income stream' from gambling industry

The English Football League (EFL) has said it will look to protect the "vital income stream" it receives from the gambling sector following the latest reports the government is set to review the industry's relationship with sport.

The Sunday Times claimed culture secretary Oliver Dowden will launch a call for evidence in November as the first step of the government's long-promised review of gambling legislation. Gambling advertising and shirt sponsorship is expected to form part of that review.

In a statement released in the wake of the report, the EFL said: "Our approach in respect of gambling sponsorship is under constant review and the league will also contribute to any call for evidence by the government as we seek to protect an important and vital income stream for our membership in a time of financial crisis."
