'Frankie Dettori has already had a sit on this unraced brother to Cracksman'

As summer gives way to autumn, the Racing Post's Newmarket correspondent David Milnes identifies six horses from HQ he believes will make an impact in the closing months of the Flat season.

The 500,000gns yearling purchase has taken time to come to hand this year but made his belated return a winning one at Ffos Las recently when the trip of 1m4f may have stretched his stamina. The three-year-old may improve on that and could be a big player over 1m2f in handicaps in the autumn, particularly on a sounder surface.

Frantastic
John and Thady Gosden, two-year-old

Frankie Dettori has already had a sit on this Frankel youngster at home and he knows all about his pedigree as he's a brother to his two-time Champion Stakes winner Cracksman. Unlike many two-year-olds in the town, Frantastic has managed to work on turf recently which should stand him in good stead when he makes his debut in the coming weeks.

Sir Michael Stoute, three-year-old

Has only had three starts including a 15-length romp under a penalty in a mile novice at Chelmsford last month. Could be in line for some black type by the close of play in November so will have to be competitive off a mark of 85 in a mile fillies-only handicap at Ascot on Saturday.

Hafit
Charlie Appleby, two-year-old

The son of Dubawi cost 2.1 million guineas as a yearling and didn't disappoint in either looks or ability when making a winning debut on the Newmarket July course last month. That form could not have worked out any better with the second and third having obliged since and Appleby has the Haynes, Hanson and Clark Stakes at Newbury on September 17, a race he won with Yibir a year ago, in mind.

William Haggas, five-year-old

Has only made seven starts across three seasons and was all set to make his latest comeback at York in the Ebor Handicap but the rain didn't come in time. Has been ready for a while and could try again in Saturday's Group 3 September Stakes at Kempton which would be his first start on the all-weather.

Richard Spencer, two-year-old

Was the pick of the paddock prior to his debut at Newbury in August but that is as good as it got for the juvenile son of Kodi Bear, who ran far too free early doors and failed to finish his race off. Providing he can settle and race the right way around he may make amends next time, perhaps around a bend.
