Gosden and Dettori target Derby with handicap winner Private Secretary
When John Gosden and Frankie Dettori decide to target the Investec Derby with a 92-rated colt who was last seen winning a handicap off 9lb lower, it is worth taking note.
When that colt is by sire of the moment Kingman and won the same Sandown race Gosden landed with 2015 Epsom runner-up Jack Hobbs, it becomes even more interesting.
Private Secretary is the horse in question. While Jack Hobbs went on to finish second to his Derby conqueror Golden Horn in the Dante, Private Secretary has been unraced since.
Too Darn Hot could be set to make surprise Irish 2,000 Guineas bid
The handicapper raised Private Secretary a rather lenient 9lb for his comfortable success under Dettori unlike Jack Hobbs, who was raised a whopping 24lb before racing in the Dante off a mark of 104.
Speaking at the Breakfast With The Stars at Epsom on Tuesday, Dettori said: "John [Gosden] is very keen on Private Secretary but he's rated 92 so has got to find 20lb to be competitive in the Derby.
"But you have to listen to John. I will ride him this weekend and it looks like he will go ahead and run."
Gosden added: "I couldn't be more pleased with how well Private Secretary has done. He comes from a good staying family and he will be left in the race and I will discuss it with his owner."
Gosden could also be represented by Humanitarian, who won a novice race at Salisbury last week.
