A 1,000 Guineas mover, Derby hopefuls and more as Classic build-up heats up

The 2022 Flat season is picking up pace and it is full steam ahead to the first of the Classics – the Qipco 2,000 Guineas and 1,000 Guineas at Newmarket – on April 30 and May 1 respectively.

Market movers come thick and fast as the key Classic trials are run in Britain and Ireland, but big-race contenders can come from anywhere and it's easy to miss a potential dark horse. Our Classic Clues series, which runs every morning, has you covered.

Here's a recap of Tuesday's action and how it has impacted the Classic betting, while we mark your card with key names to note on Wednesday.

Racing round-up: Cachet moves into 1,000 Guineas picture

The Group 3 Lanwades Stud Nell Gwyn Stakes may have provided the biggest clue from Tuesday’s action, with Cachet impressing with the way she travelled and saw out the seven-furlong trip, bolstering her claims for next month’s 1,000 Guineas.

George Boughey’s performer reversed the Rockfel Stakes form with Hello You, proving that she has trained on and the ability is still there, as she bids to give her owners a fruitful three-year-old campaign.

'She'll step forward again' - Cachet camp eye Guineas glory after convincing win

Also on the day was the bet365 Listed European Free Handicap, which was won by the Charlie Appleby-trained New Science who holds a 2,000 Guineas entry. Godolphin are already well stocked for this Classic, owning the current top two in the market Native Trail and Coroebus, with New Science now another useful and realistic option.

Cachet 20 (from 50)

What they said:

George Boughey, trainer of Cachet:

"She was fit enough today but she'll step forward again from this. She's obviously a very high-class filly and she'll come back here for the 1,000 Guineas when the mile is the obvious question mark. She was a weak finisher at Del Mar last time but she loves this track and will be giving us a good shout at the furlong pole all being well on May 1.”

Our experts disagree over Nell Gwyn winner Cachet's 1,000 Guineas claims

All eyes on . . . Craven Stakes

All eyes will be on the bet365 Craven Stakes (3.35) as current 2,000 Guineas favourite Native Trail bids to prove his Classic credentials and maintain his unbeaten record.

The Charlie Appleby-trained hopeful is taking on some very unexposed types from the major yards – Aidan O’Brien, William Haggas and Jane Chapple-Hyam – but is clear on the ratings and is odds-on.

The Godolphin trainer has taken two of the last three runnings, including with last year’s 2,000 Guineas runner-up Master Of The Seas, and a dominant display may see his Classic odds shorten even further.

William Buick will hope to double up on the day with Derby entrant New London, who runs in the 1m2f novice (4.10). A winner over course and distance on his debut, he is as short as 20-1 to take the Epsom Classic.

The opening maiden fillies’ stakes (1.15) will determine whether the once-raced, 1,000 Guineas entrant Ameynah has the potential to take her place in the Classic line-up.
