Prime minister Boris Johnson claimed his win in Monday's vote of confidence among Conservative MPs was comprehensive, but bookmakers believe the fact 148 of 359 did not support him means his time in Downing Street may soon come to an end.

Johnson, who faced the vote as his backbenchers reacted to the Sue Gray report into parties being held at number ten during the Covid-19 lockdown, is as short as 1-3 not to lead the Tories into the next general election, which can be held no later than January 24, 2025.

He is 15-8 with Paddy Power to lead his party into that poll but while the PM is anxious to draw a line under the episode, he could still face a difficult few weeks.

Johnson is 16-1 with Hills to have left his position by the end of the month, when all eyes will be on by-elections in Wakefield and the Devon constituency of Tiverton and Honiton on June 23.

Wakefield was a Labour seat for 87 years before the Conservatives took it at the 2019 election as it was one of several northern constituencies that went blue and helped Johnson to an 80-seat majority.

However, Labour are 1-100 to take it back after MP Imran Khan was imprisoned for sexual assault last month and the situation also looks grave in Devon, where the Liberal Democrats are 1-5 to overturn a Tory majority of more than 24,000.

Johnson is 5-4 to have left Downing Street by the end of the year and former health secretary Jeremy Hunt is 9-2 favourite with Coral, Hills and Ladbrokes to take over as Conservative leader, while Labour's Keir Starmer is 11-2 with Hills to be next Prime minister.

The Tories are 5-6 to win the most seats at the next election with Betfred, while Labour are available at 11-10.
