Race preview

The stage is set for a spectacular San Marino Grand Prix and the passionate Misano crowd could witness the first victory of a future champion.

Fabio Quartararo has had a sensational debut season in the premier class and was right in the hunt for a fourth pole position. Starting third will give the Frenchman a great chance though, at a track where all the Yamahas have been on the pace.

Quartararo had looked something of a one-lap wonder earlier in the season but his racecraft has improved markedly and a victory looks overdue.

The Yamahas had seemed set for a front-row lockout as Quartararo headed his Petronas teammate Franco Morbidelli and factory team rider Maverick Vinales as the session drew to a close.

But a surprise late lap from KTM's Pol Espargaro saw him pip Quartararo's time by 0.011 seconds before Vinales - tipped at 3-1 in Racing Post Sport - went even quicker to claim his first pole since the season-opener in Qatar.

It has been a horrible weekend for Honda with Cal Crutchlow and Jorge Lorenzo way off the pace. But championship leader Marc Marquez looked set to claim his fifth pole position in a row before being unwittingly baulked by Vinales's teammate Valentino Rossi.

The Spaniard starts a season-low fifth on the grid and with a huge championship lead he may be happy to have a relaxing ride and collect some points.

A Rossi victory on home soil would be a fairytale result and can't be ruled out with the bike in such great form, but from seventh on the grid the Doctor might well find a couple of the young guns too hot.
