Singapore Grand Prix preview

Max Verstappen has produced some barely believable performances in the second half of the F1 season, but he will have to top all of those if he is to win Sunday’s Singapore Grand Prix from eighth on the grid.

Verstappen looked set to storm to pole position at Marina Bay but was called into the pits on his final qualifying lap as his team feared he was about to run out of fuel – a faux pas that would have seen him disqualified from the session.

Singapore is one of the toughest tracks on the calendar for overtaking, even with a significant performance advantage. In any other year, odds of 2-1 about winning at Marina Bay from eighth would be laughable, but Verstappen has shown he can never be discounted.

The Red Bull ace won easily in Hungary – another twisty track where overtaking is considered virtually impossible – despite starting tenth. And Verstappen also recorded comfortable victories in Belgium (from 13th) and Italy (seventh).

However, the Dutchman had to work hard to win his home race among those results having started from pole, and Marina Bay has some similarities with that circuit.

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc still has a mathematical chance of the championship and has a golden opportunity to score his fourth win of the season from pole position.

However, he and his Ferrari team have already blown several such chances this year – Leclerc has failed to convert any of his last six poles – and it may not be worth trusting him at a short price.

Lewis Hamilton has been in trouble for ignoring rules banning jewellery this weekend, but he has sparkled on track and qualified just 0.054 seconds away from pole.

Seven-time world champion Hamilton has won at least one race in every year of his career but is yet to taste victory this season.

With his Mercedes habitually much stronger in race trim than in qualifying, it could be worth chancing that this is his day.
