Wexford v Limerick

Innovate Wexford Park, 2pm Sunday

Wexford welcome All-Ireland champions Limerick to Innovate Wexford Park on Sunday afternoon and the home side will be undoubtedly confident of causing an upset.

Limerick’s path to All-Ireland success in 2018 started in Division 1B and it will be interesting to see John Kiely’s attitude towards the league this year. While last year was used to bring in new talent and find his best team, they come into this campaign following an interrupted preparation after their team holiday.

Kiely has signaled his intent by naming 11 of the side who started last year’s All-Ireland final.

This game will have been in Wexford’s minds for a long time, though, and they can lay down a marker for the year ahead as they did in 2018, when they won their first two games. With three home games in the league this year they have a great chance of making the quarter-finals.

Davy Fitzgerald was convinced to extend his Wexford tenure this year and won’t have done so just to make up the numbers. Fitzgerald has a history of preparing teams who are strong at home and they will be up for a battle.

While Limerick would be expected to win this game comfortably on most days, there’s a chance they haven’t yet hit top gear and the home side have a chance to cause an upset.

Kilkenny v Cork

Nowlan Park, 2pm Sunday

Cork will be bidding to banish the demons of 2018 when they make the trip to Nowlan Park to face a Kilkenny side who made solid progress last year. Both of these sides’ 2018 campaigns ended against the All-Ireland winners and by extremely tight margins.

Cork looked to have their All-Ireland final place secured against Limerick but injuries took their toll and they failed to get over the line.

They won just one game in the league last year, beating Kilkenny in round one, but John Meyler may look to put more emphasis on the league this year. They will be without the services of Darragh Fitzgibbon due to club commitments and while many of their stars are involved in Fitzgibbon Cup throughout the league campaign, they will be match-ready having played two rounds already.

Kilkenny will be without sharpshooter TJ Reid due to club commitments with Ballyhale and while they have struggled without Reid before, Brian Cody has put faith in his youth with the well-touted Huw Lawlor coming in at full-back.

Nowlan Park is regarded as probably the toughest ground to visit in hurling and Kilkenny derailed Tipperary’s season in the league final there last year. It might help the Cats to get over the line.
