Match preview

With nine games remaining, Barcelona are in pole position to claim a third consecutive La Liga crown but things look far from straightforward for the title favourites at third-placed Sevilla.

Wins to nil against Mallorca and Leganes since La Liga’s resumption have maintained Barca’s lead at the summit but the fixtures get much tougher from now onwards and their performances haven’t been as dominant as the scorelines suggest.

Defensive doubts also make Barca’s task harder than would usually be the case.

Gerard Pique limped off in the second half of Tuesday’s 2-0 home win over Leganes and must be assessed while his replacement, Samuel Umtiti, picked up a late yellow card to rule him out of this clash.

Pique may be fit to return but even if they are tighter defensively through his presence, Barca have shown they are far from bombproof on their travels.

Quique Setien’s side have dropped points in eight of their 14 away assignments this season and have struggled on trips to elite opposition, failing to score in defeats at Real Madrid, Valencia and Athletic Bilbao.

Setien will be hoping his array of attacking stars are at their brilliant best at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium, but that is far from certain to happen.

The Catalan giants have scored just 22 of their 69 league goals on the road and even talisman Lionel Messi, who has netted in one of his last eight away appearances, has proved more comfortable in his own surroundings.

With just two defeats in 14 home league games this season and four points from meetings with Real Betis and Levante since La Liga return, Sevilla should be confident of stifling the table-toppers.

Key stat

Sevilla have lost only one of their last 17 games on home turf.
