Match preview

Seven consecutive wins have put Real Madrid in complete control of the La Liga title race and they should have few problems extending that tally to eight at home to an ailing Alaves.

Real have got their mojo back since Zinedine Zidane’s reappointment and they look set for more silverware under their tactically astute Frenchman, who guided them to Champions League glory in three consecutive seasons in his previous stint at the Bernabeu.

With four games to go, Los Galacticos are one point ahead of title rivals Barcelona with an outing to spare and this is an assignment they should pass with flying colours.

Zidane’s side have been utterly dominant at the Bernabeu, recording 13 wins and four draws from their 17 home games and conceding only ten goals along the way.

Real have kept clean sheets in five of their last seven wins, which includes shutting out Valencia, Mallorca and Getafe in their previous three games in the Spanish capital.

And Alaves, who have lost six of their seven matches since La Liga’s resumption and each of their previous five, should be easy prey for a ruthless Real.

Asier Garitano’s side are six points clear of the relegation places and their early-season results may be enough for them to avoid the drop.

However, there is an evident lack of firepower in their ranks - they have netted just 12 goals in 17 games on their travels - and it may be a quiet evening for Belgian number one Thibaut Courtois.

The visitors have fired blanks against Espanyol, Celta Vigo, Osasuna, Granada and Real Valladolid within the last month and may struggle to breach a Real backline, which is still strong despite missing the services of suspended duo Dani Carvajal and Sergio Ramos.

Key stat

Real Madrid have won their last three La Liga home meetings against Alaves to nil.
