Match preview

Sevilla marked the return of La Liga with a 2-0 derby win over Real Betis and they should follow up with another three points at mid-table Levante.

That victory tightened Sevilla's grip on third place in the table, behind Barcelona and Real Madrid – two teams who have suffered away defeats to Levante this season.

However, those memorable results came at the Estadi Ciutat de Valencia while the clash with Sevilla, and the rest of Levante's home games this season, will be held almost 100 miles away at the Estadio Camilo Cano in La Nuna.

That fact further erodes whatever home advantage Levante might have enjoyed in this behind-closed-doors fixture and solid Sevilla have also had a little more time to recover from their first game back after the coronavirus suspension.

They welcomed Betis on Thursday night while Levante took on local rivals Valencia on Friday, salvaging a point thanks to a 97th-minute penalty.

Sevilla look a tougher proposition, however, as they continue their bid for a place in next season's Champions League.

They have lost all three games against Barca and Real this season but remain a cut above the rest of the league, suffering just three defeats in 25 matches against teams below them in the table.

They negotiated a potentially tricky fixture against Betis courtesy of a penalty from top scorer Lucas Ocampos and a header from former Manchester City midfielder Fernando.

Brazilian centre-back Diego Carlos, reportedly a transfer target for Liverpool, gave another excellent performance at the back and Julen Lopetegui's men are worth backing to grind out another victory with a clean sheet.

They restricted Betis to just one shot on target and six of their seven away wins in the league this season have been to nil.

Levante couldn't find a breakthrough in October's reverse fixture when an 86th-minute goal from Luuk de Jong gave Sevilla a 1-0 victory and they may struggle to lay a glove on the visitors at their temporary home near Alicante.

They are a nuggety side who rarely get thrashed and this season's trips to Barca, Real, Sevilla and Atletico Madrid all ended in defeats by a one-goal margin.

However, the goals have dried up for Levante since the start of the year, with just eight in ten league games in 2020, and another blank could be on the cards against an impressive Sevilla side.

Key stat

Sevilla have scored in their last 20 La Liga matches, since a 4-0 defeat at Barcelona in October.
