Weekend preview

Wolfsburg v Mainz

BT Sport 1, 5pm

Wolfsburg were dominant in their 2-1 win over Malmo in the Europa League on Thursday and they can continue their strong form after the winter break by beating Mainz.

Key forward Wout Weghorst hit a hat-trick in their last Bundesliga fixture - a 3-2 win at Hoffenheim - and can fire his side to victory against the away side's feeble rearguard.

Mainz have managed only two clean sheets in 22 league fixtures this term and, while their forward-thinking approach is useful against the league's lesser lights, they could come unstuck at the Volkswagen Arena.

Maximilian Arnold will be missing for the hosts but Yannick Gerhardt is an able deputy and can help Wolfsburg to a fourth win in five games in all competitions.

Rennes v Nimes

BT Sport ESPN, 4pm

Nimes have propelled themselves out of the drop zone in Ligue 1 with four successive wins and they can run Rennes close at Roazhon Park.

The relegation-threatened visitors have beaten Monaco, Dijon, Nice and Angers this month and although Rennes represent a step up in quality, the hosts have not been in great form.

They have fired blanks in their last three league games against Lille, Brest and Reims, and despite the 14-point gap between them and Nimes, they have scored only four more goals.

The reverse fixture was tightly contested with Rennes prevailing 1-0 but they are worth opposing this time.

Real Valladolid v Espanyol

LaLigaTV, 3pm

It was a Thursday to forget in the Europa League for Espanyol, who were blown apart by Wolves at Molineux, but the focus for the Spaniards was always going to be survival and things are looking up in that respect.

The away side have lost only one of their last six La Liga assignments and have taken points off Barcelona, Villarreal and Sevilla since the turn of the year.

Raul de Thomas is fighting to be fit, having scored five goals in five appearances since signing in January, but even without their new marksman, they should have enough to earn at least a point.

Valladolid have only one win in their last 12 league games as a shortage of goals continues to cost them - Sergi Guardiola is their top scorer in La Liga with three strikes.

Atalanta v Sassuolo

Premier Sports 1, 2pm

Atalanta sent shockwaves across Europe with their resounding 4-1 win over Valencia in the Champions League on Wednesday and there should be minimal risk of a hangover from that clash as they prepare to face lowly Sassuolo.

La Dea have lost only one of their league games following a midweek European fixture this season and have the squad depth to rotate and still impress in Serie A.

While the visitors will be without Hamed Junior Traore, Alessandro Tripaldelli and former Tottenham man Vlad Chiriches, Atalanta will have a fully-rested Duvan Zapata at their disposal after the Colombian played 15 minutes against Valencia.

He can freshen up an attack who have managed 63 goals in the league this term, won the reverse fixture 4-1 and have twice put seven goals past teams in Serie A.
