Weekend preview

Roma v Torino

Premier 1, 7.45pm

Serie A's capital clubs are battling it out for the Champions League places and Roma can tighten their grasp on a top-four berth by beating Torino.

Even at this stage of the campaign it could be a make-or-break month for the hosts, who also face Juventus and Lazio in January. But they have been in flying form, winning five and drawing two of their last seven matches.

Torino are hindered at the back by the loss of Gleison Bremer through suspension and could take only one point from their last two encounters against relegation-threatened Spal and Hellas Verona.

Genoa v Sassuolo

Premier 1, 5pm

It has been a baptism of fire in football management for Thiago Motta. The former Paris Saint-Germain midfielder is currently coaching a Genoa side at the foot of the Serie A standings with only two wins in 17 league matches.

Their demise has been in large part down to a leaky defence rather than a significantly blunt attack - they have scored more goals than Spal, Brescia, Sampdoria and Udinese and as many as 11th-placed Milan.

Sassuolo, meanwhile, primed with exciting forwards Domenico Berardi, Francesco Caputo and Hamed Junior Traore, have scored only two goals fewer (29) than highflying Juventus (31) this campaign. Backing both teams to hit the target could be the wisest punting strategy.

Alaves v Real Betis

Premier 2, 3pm

Half of Real Betis's La Liga wins this term have come since November 23, as they swatted aside Valencia, Mallorca and Athletic Bilbao in rapid succession, and they can add Alaves to their list of recent scalps.

The attacking nature of Rubi's side makes them well versed in walloping the league's lesser lights but means they often come unstuck against bigger sides who are more organised at the back and able to counter.

That was the case against Atletico Madrid - the Andalusians saw 67 per cent of the ball and won the shot count 15-8 but ultimately fell to a 2-1 defeat.

Alaves will put up less resistance, having shipped 11 goals in their last four games, including three against third division side Real Jaen in the Copa del Rey second round.

Real Sociedad v Villarreal

Premier 2, 1pm

Real Sociedad simply cannot stop scoring. Imanol Alguacil's side have netted 18 goals in their last five assignments - eight of which came against third-division outfit Becerril in the Copa del Rey.

They had 35 shots in that game, having had 19 in the game before against Barcelona and 13 away to Osasuna last time out.

A youthful attack comprising Mikel Oyarzabal, Martin Odegaard and Alexander Isak has been ripping through La Liga opposition and the Basque club are value to see off Villarreal.

The Yellow Submarine have been hopeless on their travels, winning only three of their nine games on the road, and are too open at the back to contain Sociedad.
