Copa del Rey, 8.30pm Thursday

Real Madrid have got one foot in the Copa del Rey semi-finals and they shouldn’t mess up in Girona.

Leading 4-2 from the first leg of their quarter-final, manager Santiago Solari has demanded a professional effort in the Montolivi.

The scars of recent Copa losses to Celta Vigo and Leganes will help to focus Real minds, especially as they haven’t won the competition since 2014. As they are ten points behind Barcelona in the title race, there is a heightened priority attached to the Copa this term.

Real are inevitably odds-on even though Solari looks likely to make a few tweaks to his team.

Girona, despite not having won in ten outings, have drawn five of their last eight matches and can hold firm once again at a stadium where they are traditionally strong.

Two of those draws were against Atletico Madrid in the previous round when Eusebio Sacristan’s men squeaked through on away goals.

They have started to drop down the table – they are three points off the drop zone – but while they’ve got some sort of a sniff of causing an upset they will stay competitive.

Solari will make changes with the likes of Sergio Ramos – two-goal hero from the first game – and Marcos Asensio set for rests after picking up knocks.
