Weekend preview

Lyon v Saint-Etienne

BT Sport 1, 8pm

One of the big European fixtures of the weekend - Juventus against Inter - has been called off along with a stack of other Serie A matches because of the coronavirus crisis in Italy.

Matches at Milan, Udinese, Parma and Sassuolo have also been rescheduled to May 13, with the Coppa Italia final pushed back to May 20. Clubs were said to be unhappy at missing out on revenue by having to play the matches behind closed doors.

There are still plenty of European fixtures going ahead and the best bet could come in a dust-up between local rivals in France.

Saint-Etienne would be right to feel green with envy looking at their Derby du Rhone rivals Lyon, who are fresh from a shock win over Juventus in the Champions League.

Without key forward Memphis Depay, the hosts shut out Juve 1-0 on Wednesday to make it three wins and a draw in their last four matches.

They have booked their place in the French Cup semi-finals and are only a handful of wins from returning to the top four, all while rivals Saint-Etienne are looking over their shoulder after winning only eight league games all season.

The visitors are missing Zaydou Youssouf, Kevin Monnet-Paquet, Arnaud Nordin and suspended Wesley Fofana for the derby clash and could be out of their depth.

Espanyol v Atletico Madrid

LaLigaTV, 3pm

Atletico Madrid's defiant win over Liverpool seems to have put a spring in their step and the gulf in class should be clear to see at Espanyol.

Diego Simeone's men followed up their Champions League success with a 3-1 defeat of one of La Liga's form sides, Villarreal.

Joao Felix came off the bench to round off the win and the Portuguese forward takes his side to the next level so having him available to slot into the first team is a massive boost.

Espanyol's survival hopes are fading fast and with just one win in their last six league assignments, it is hard to see them causing a stir against sturdy Atletico.

RB Leipzig v Bayer Leverkusen

BT Sport 2, 2.30pm

Leipzig showed a wider audience how dangerous they can be with their 1-0 win at Tottenham in the Champions League and they can maintain their title push against Bayer Leverkusen.

The hosts are fresh from blitzing Schalke 5-0 in Gelsenkirchen to make it four successive clean sheets in all competitions - that run started with an admirable 0-0 draw at Bayern Munich, showing they have the defensive resolve to complement their barnstorming attack.

Leverkusen are enjoying a run of five successive victories, including the scalps of Borussia Dortmund and Porto, but their front line is blunter after the loss of Kevin Volland to a potentially season-ending ankle injury.

They will need to find an alternative source of goals in his absence and a trip to the Red Bull Arena, where Leipzig have lost only once in the league, is hardly the ideal time to experiment with personnel.
