The West Indies are as short as 8-1 with some bookmakers to win the World Cup after cruising to a seven-wicket pummelling of Pakistan, who were bowled out for just 105 at Trent Bridge.

Jason Holder's men were available at 20-1 to lift the trophy before their opening match but their best price was slashed to 10-1 after a 50 from Chris Gayle and figures of 4-27 from Oshane Thomas led them to victory.

The Windies elected to bowl after winning the toss and made their first breakthrough within the first three overs as Sheldon Cottrell dislodged Imam-ul-Haq for two.

Babar Azam, a 3-1 shot to finish Pakistan's top runscorer in the match, registered 22 before being caught by Shai Hope off the bowling of 22-year-old Thomas.

His score was matched by opener Fakhar Zaman as the men in green were bowled out within 22 overs.

Gayle scored nine boundaries on his way to his 50 before Nicholas Pooran helped his side over the line with an unbeaten 34.

The result has seen 1992 World Cup winners Pakistan drift to a best-priced 40-1 for the title and 7-2 to make the semi-finals.
