After England's shock defeat to 8-1 shots Sri Lanka on Friday, Afghanistan fell just short of an even bigger upset against India at the Hampshire Bowl.

The Afghans, 12-1 outsiders before the game, traded at 10-11 in-play during their run-chase before a Mohammad Shami hat-trick sealed a tense 11-run victory for India.

To put that winning margin into perspective, Sporting Index's pre-match spread on India's supremacy was 82-92; the market settled at 11 in their favour.

Afghanistan bowled superbly to restrict India to 224-8 as spinners Mujeeb Ur Rahman (1-26), Mohammad Nabi (2-33) and Rashid Khan (1-38) tied down a powerful batting line-up.

Virat Kohli top-scored for India with 67 but the skipper had an uncomfortable afternoon as Afghanistan, 9-4 shots at the start of the run-chase, reached 106-2 in pursuit of 225.

The Afghans had just gone odds-on in-play when a double-strike from Jasprit Bumrah tilted the game back in India's favour but Mohammad Nabi kept the underdogs in the hunt until the 50th over.

Nabi struck a four off the first ball of the final over to leave his side requiring 12 runs off five balls. However, the all-rounder was caught at long-off for 52 before Shami wrapped up the win for India by dismissing Aftab Alam and Mujeeb for first-ball ducks.

Kohli's men are 2-1 joint-favourites with England to win the World Cup although some firms make India their narrow market leaders at 15-8.

England face their other main rivals in the betting, 13-5 shots Australia, at Lord's on Tuesday.

New Zealand deny brilliant Brathwaite

There was another thrilling finish in Saturday's second game as New Zealand claimed a five-run win over the West Indies at Old Trafford.

The drama started early in Manchester as both Kiwi openers were dismissed for golden ducks in Sheldon Cottrell's first over.

Kane Williamson's 148 steered New Zealand to 291-8 and the West Indies stumbled to 164-7 before an extraordinary century from number six Carlos Brathwaite.

The Windies' in-play odds crashed from 33-1 to 4-9 during Brathwaite's innings but he was caught on the boundary for 101, going for what would have been a matchwinning six.

New Zealand's win took them back to the top of the table and they have been cut to 6-1 to win the World Cup.
