South Africa's miserable World Cup campaign continued as a 49-run defeat to Pakistan at Lord’s ended any slender hopes the Proteas had of reaching the semi-finals.

They had been fourth in the betting at 9-1 at the start of the tournament and 11-8 to reach the last four but an opening defeat to England set the tone for a hugely disappointing effort.

South Africa were 8-11 favourites to beat Pakistan but a blistering innings of 89 off 59 balls from Haris Sohail – a 9-1 chance to top-score – powered the 6-5 underdogs to 308-7.

The Proteas never got to grips with the required run-rate and only skipper Faf du Plessis (63) passed 50 as they slipped to their fifth defeat in six completed matches.

Pakistan, whose last three matches are against New Zealand, Afghanistan and Bangladesh, are 33-1 to win the World Cup and 7-1 to qualify for the semi-finals.
