England cleared the first of the two hurdles standing between them and a place in the World Cup semi-finals with a 31-run win over India at Edgbaston.

They moved back into the top four, ahead of Pakistan, and will be certain of a place in the last four if they beat New Zealand at the Riverside on Wednesday. They are 1-2 to see off the Black Caps, who are 9-5 for victory in Chester-le-Street.

Coral make England 2-7 to reach the semi-finals. New Zealand are 1-50 to qualify for the last four with Pakistan 11-4 and Bangladesh 16-1.

England are 11-4 to win the World Cup, behind 2-1 Australia and 9-4 India, who had won all five of their completed games before their defeat in Birmingham.

England had been slight outsiders at evens before Eoin Morgan won the toss and opted to bat first.

Jason Roy, returning after missing the last three games with a hamstring injury, and Jonny Bairstow shared a blistering opening stand of 160 and Ben Stokes's 79 powered England to 337-7.

Bairstow, a 7-2 chance to top-score, made 111 and India were 3-1 in-play at the start of their innings but struggled to recover after crawling to 28-1 from the first ten overs.

Rohit Sharma top-scored with 102 but England kept chipping away with Liam Plunkett claiming the key wicket of Virat Kohli for 66 and Chris Woakes dismissing both openers and taking a brilliant catch to get rid of Rishabh Pant.

Even if England lose to New Zealand, they could still qualify depending on the results of India v Bangladesh on Tuesday and Pakistan v Bangladesh on Friday.
