India's winning run at the 2019 Cricket World Cup came to an end against England on Sunday and Virat Kohli’s men have had little time to reflect on their first setback of the tournament.

They are long odds-on to make a winning return to Edgbaston against Bangladesh although the 9-2 Tigers upset the odds in victories over South Africa and the West Indies.

They have a slim chance of reaching the semi-finals although their bowlers conceded huge totals in the defeats to Australia (381-5) and England (386-6), so improvement is required against a dangerous India top order.

Best bets
India’s bowlers came under serious pressure for the first time at this tournament as Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow battered 98 runs between the 11th and 20th overs of Sunday’s game.

Their batsmen never found the right rhythm in a stiff run-chase, leaving themselves too much ground to make up after scoring only 28-1 from the first ten overs.

India backers won’t be too concerned, however. They are virtually assured of a semi-final spot with two games to go and their spinners should be more effective on a worn Edgbaston pitch than they were against Roy and Bairstow on a fresh deck.

Still, given Bangladesh’s displays at this tournament they could run India closer than the betting suggests.

Shakib Al Hasan has franked his ranking as the world’s best ODI all-rounder, scoring 476 runs and taking ten wickets, and their 62-run win over Afghanistan last time out made it three victories in six completed games.

Mushfiqur Rahim continued his excellent batting form with 82 against the Afghans, following on from a century against Australia. The wicketkeeper made 78 in the win over South Africa and 44 against England while he top-scored for the Tigers with 90 in their warm-up defeat to India in Cardiff.

The Mighty Atom struck 61 in the 2017 Champions Trophy loss to India at Edgbaston and he is a decent price to top-score at the same venue.

Shakib, Mustafizur Rahman and Mohammad Saifuddin are the joint-leading wicket-takers for Bangladesh with ten scalps each so youngster Saifuddin catches the eye at 11-2 to be their top bowler.

He took two wickets against South Africa, New Zealand and England, three against the Windies, and claimed the prize scalp of Kohli – bowled – in the warm-up defeat to India.

Team news
Bangladesh
Mashrafe Mortaza (hamstring) and Mahmudullah (calf) should be fit for the Tigers.

India
Vijay Shankar (toe) is out of the tournament but his replacement – batsman Mayank Agarwal – is yet to arrive. Lokesh Rahul’s back problem will be assessed.

Venue
England’s batsmen racked up 337-7 on a true batting pitch at Edgbaston on Sunday but the previous game at the venue was played on a pitch that helped Pakistan and New Zealand’s spinners.

There is no clear advantage when it comes to batting first or second – seven of the last 14 completed ODIs in Birmingham have been won by the side setting a target and seven by the team chasing.

Weather
Cloudy but dry for most of the match, 18C.
