Brazil's men were roundly criticised after failing to shine at the 2014 World Cup but their women can rise to the challenge of hosting this summer’s Olympic tournament which starts today with six group stage matches.

Three groups of four teams take part and there should be plenty of competitive games, given that eight of Fifa’s top 12 ranked teams are competing.

Reigning champions USA are 5-4 to defend their title but have been handed a tricky draw. The Americans are joined by France – the number three ranked team – in Group G.
