USA in pole position for relays after commanding qualifier

The curtain comes down on the greatest show on vulcanised rubber on Sunday with seven finals. Caster Semenya and Almaz Ayana are the biggest stars competing on a night that culminates with the 4x400m relays.

The USA women (advised by Racing Post Sport at 11-8) are 2-7 for relay gold after their B team cruised through qualifying, while the men are now a best-priced 1-6 after their only viable rivals, and our tip, Botswana dropped the baton and failed to qualify.

Despite coming up short in the 1,500m, Semenya is long odds-on for the 800m and has looked imperious in the rounds with America's Ajee Wilson looking the biggest danger.

Mutaz Essa Barshim looks to have the high jump sewn up after a commanding qualifying, but despite adding consistency this season he is yet to win a major gold and 1-5 is almost as skinny as the lanky Qatari.

Olympic gold medalist Sandra Perkovic is in to 1-6 for the women's discus, with Racing Post pick Yaime Perez out to 5-1, after she threw 69.67 in qualifying - but Perkovic has also been temperamental in finals and hope is not yet lost as Perez has beaten her twice this season.

There is better news for Racing Post Sport followers in the men's 1,500m and women's 5,000m, with selections Filip Ingebrigtsen and Hellen Obri in to 3-1 for a podium finish (from 8-1) and 5-4 for gold (from 4-1) following impressive performances in qualifying.
