Match preview

The 2022 London Marathon will be without its biggest star after Mo Farah withdrew form this year’s race earlier in the week. However, that doesn't mean both the men's and women's races are lacking in star quality.

Six men take to the start line boasting a personal best of below 2:04 - the most ever in a marathon. The fastest runner in the men's field is distance running great Kenenisa Bekele, who clocked 2:01 when winning the 2019 Berlin Marathon.

The Ethiopian legend has started just four races since that victory, though, and despite his third-place finish in the recent Great North Run, recent injury issues make it difficult to have confidence in him.

Unlike Bekele, there aren't too many doubts over favourite Amos Kipruto, who was second in March’s Tokyo Marathon in a time of 2:03. The Kenyan then won the Gothenburg Half Marathon and looks to have had the perfect preparation for London.

In the women’s race, the withdrawal of world record holder Brigid Kosgei has left Yalemzerf Yehualaw as clear favourite.

The Ethiopian is undefeated in her last four road races and ran the fastest debut marathon in women’s history in May, 2:17.

Marathon runners tend to get better with age so there is highly likely to be more to come from the talented 23-year-old. She can deny defending champion Joyciline Jepkosgei a third victory in a World Marathon Major.

Any hopes of a strong home performance were dealt a blow after Commonwealth Games 10,000m champion Eilish McColgan was another high-profile withdrawal. Charlotte Purdue finished tenth a year ago and is likely to be the first British woman home.
