Two potential St Leger contenders feature in this week's must-watch replays

With autumn coming, the conditions faced across the weekend might turn out to be fairly typical in what is left of the season. Keith Melrose identifies the performances to watch.

Race of the week

Celebration Mile, 3.35 Goodwood, Saturday

All experienced punters know the pitfalls of taking form on testing ground too literally, but in the case of Century Dream he is now being pointed towards the QEII, which has an above-average chance of yielding similar conditions. His emphatic win in the feature Celebration Mile on Saturday therefore requires careful consideration.

Classic clues

March Stakes, 3.00 Goodwood, Saturday

Subjectivist is going to keep putting his hand up for the St Leger until we all notice, it seems. The March Stakes was his third trial for Doncaster and he ran out a 15-length winner over Cabaletta. Again, soft ground exaggerated things but if it turns up similarly testing on Saturday week then he is evidently equipped to deal with it.

Doyle's dominance

Winter Hill Stakes, 3.15 Windsor, Saturday

Of all Hollie Doyle's successes this summer, none better illustrates that she is earning her headlines than her ride on Extra Elusive, part of a big ITV double at Windsor. This gelding, in the colours of Doyle's boss Imad Al Sagar, has twice benefited from his rider's enterprise on the big days, her move to the rail proving decisive here. On another day, on better ground, Fox Chairman might reverse the form.

Classic clues, part two

Yeats Stakes, 5.05 Navan, Saturday

The Yeats Stakes is designed to unearth future stars of the staying division and may well have achieved its aim this year with winner Galileo Chrome. This strapping sort ran out a convincing winner on Saturday and could be bound for the St Leger next, although he has plentiful options.

Jumping is back

Perth Gold Cup, 3.15 Perth, Sunday

The Perth Gold Cup moved from its June slot this year to a place in the calendar where autumn and winter horses could reasonably contest the race. It did indeed turn out to be a better-than-average renewal, at least that was the impression left at the finish on Sunday.
