6-1 the field: Lockinge one of the most wide open Group 1s in recent memory

No favourite for a Group 1 in Britain in the past decade has gone off at a bigger price than 13-2, but that benchmark is coming under threat with bookmakers betting 6-1 the field for a puzzling renewal of the Al Shaqab Lockinge Stakes.

In what is a wide-open contest there is only 2lb separating 13 of the 14 runners on official ratings, although Laurens is 3lb clear when you factor in her fillies' allowance.

Laurens, a five-time Group 1 winner, was the 9-2 overnight favourite but has been joined at the head of the market by Lord Glitters, who has been backed into 6-1 (from 15-2) to break his duck at the highest level.

Starspangledbanner was sent off the 13-2 joint-favourite with Fleeting Spirit for a 24-runner edition of the Diamond Jubilee Stakes, which he won at Royal Ascot in 2010. The next most wide-open top-level contest in the past decade was the 2011 Middle Park Stakes won by Crusade, for which Caspar Netscher and Family One were 5-1 joint-favourites.

Market movers

Le Brivido, a top price of 5-1 overnight for the Lockinge, has been notably weak in the betting and is out to 7-1.

In contrast, Beat The Bank, a game winner at Sandown last time, has proved popular and is into 7-1 (from 9-1), while Without Parole, who wears first-time blinkers, is into 8-1 (from 12-1). Sharja Bridge, representing the in-form Roger Varian, is another who has been nibbled at as punters oppose those originally at the head of the market. He is into 9-1 (from 12-1).
