'Hopefully he's not finished yet' - Rohaan continues his remarkable rise

Rohaan continued his remarkable season with a brilliant weight-carrying performance to give trainer David Evans and jockey Shane Kelly their first Royal Ascot victories.

Only a three-year-old, he was denied a run in the Commonwealth Cup as he is a gelding, but this was ample compensation for connections with a fourth victory in his last five starts.

Kelly showed nerves of steel to bring Rohaan from last to first in the 21-runner field to beat Fresh into second with heavily-backed 3-1 favourite King's Lynn in third.

"It took him a while to warm up and get going and I was a little bit worried initially," the jockey said. "But the further he went the better he was and he won well in the end."

"He's a remarkable horse, he started running off a mark of 55 and has gone through the ranks. It's a great training performance by David and his team. Hopefully he's not finished yet."

No horse carried more weight than Rohaan's 9st 8lb as he returned to handicap company on a mark of 112 following victories in the Group 3 Pavilion Stakes at Ascot and Group 2 Sandy Lane at Haydock.

Evans suggested afterwards that a first crack at the highest level could come in next month's Darley July Cup at Newmarket.

On breaking his Royal Ascot duck, the trainer added: "It's taken 31 years and it's hard to believe it has happened. This feels a lot different. It's a great dream that hasn't really sunk in yet.

"He's a serious horse, but now he's being taken seriously. He's so easy to train and it's great having a nice horse. I was confident, but you never know what the draw is going to do and where the action will be. It wasn't the ideal race for him, but it's worked out well."

The 8-1 winner, who carries the colours of Chris Kiely Racing, was also the first of his age to succeed in the Wokingham since 1987 and the second three-year-old gelding to win on the day following Creative Force's victory in the Jersey Stakes.

Rohaan had previously beaten Dragon Symbol in the Sandy Lane at Haydock last month – that one having finished first past the post in the Commonwealth Cup before the result was amended – and Evans expressed his frustration at not being able to take his chance in Friday's Group 1.

"I think it's a stupid rule, but there must be a reason for it. The form was there from yesterday with the horse who won."
