Qatar Nassau Stakes (Group 1) | 1m2f | 3yo+ fillies & mares | ITV/RTV

Most open-age Group 1s at around this time of year are framed as a bellwether clash between three-year-olds and older horses. Since 2017 the balance of conditions has been slightly pushed back in favour of the older group, on account of changes to the weight-for-age scale in races over 1m2f and further.

At the all-important middle-distance trips, that 1lb difference in conditions might not change much. It would probably have altered historical trends in the Nassau Stakes, though. With 1lb less weight for age, Winsili, winner by a neck in 2013, would in theory have been second to the five-year-old Thistle Bird and the score over the last decade would be 6-4 in favour of the three-year-olds, rather than 7-3.
