If any horse in training has an undeserved reputation for being hard to catch right then it is surely Sir Dancealot, who on Tuesday bids to become the first three-time winner of Qatar Lennox Stakes (2.45).

Since the start of his four-year-old season, David Elsworth's flag-bearer has faced the starter 22 times, during which period his official mark has stayed within the same 6lb range of 111 to 117.

And of those 22 runs, six have ended up with Sir Dancealot visiting the winners' enclosure.

There will always be a certain amount of compromise in race-planning for a horse who seems to enjoy the intermediate challenge of seven furlongs, while his two previous wins in this race suggest the particular demands of Goodwood – so often a course where a race can change complexion late on – also hold particular appeal.

"It's a bit of a specialist track and he adapts well to it for a big horse, he always finishes off his races well," said Gerald Mosse, who has been on board for both of Sir Dancealot's previous late charges to victory in this race and will also be attempting the hat-trick on Tuesday. "There are plenty of runners and we'll need the breaks to come at the right moment if he is to win for a third time but I’m hopeful."

Despite the abnormal season, trainer David Elsworth has trodden the same path with Sir Dancealot which led to his 2018 success, with runs in the Criterion Stakes over seven furlongs and then the Group 1 July Cup over six.

The assessor makes him 2lb lower than in 2018, but 1lb superior to last year. In other words, a bold bid should be expected.

Elsworth will not need reminding winners have been tricky to come by since British racing's resumption, with Make Haste Slowly becoming the yard's first success earlier in the month.

However, Sir Dancealot's victory in last year's Lennox snapped a losing streak for the trainer which stretched back to April.
