Meet the horses: the public are welcome at Epsom Open day

Epsom's trainers will throw open their doors to the public on Monday keen to reinforce the message that the town is a racing hub coming increasingly back into fashion.

The yards of Laura Mongan, who trained Harbour Law to win the St Leger last year, Simon Dow, Jim Boyle, Michael Attwater, Roger Ingram, Mark Pattinson, Pat Phelan and Adam West will welcome visitors from 9.30am to the popular annual open day on the Downs.

The occasion, organised by Racing Welfare, will begin with a gallops demonstration at 8.30am with commentary from Rishi Persad and interviews with trainers, which is followed by the 'Superheroes Return' race meeting.

A spacehopper derby will start the afternoon action at 1.15pm, in which staff from Epsom’s yards will take each other on for the 'hop til you drop' trophy.

Dow, who won a £115,000 prize with Mr Scaramanga in Qatar this year, said: "This is the third year we've had this format of holding the open day on the morning of the bank holiday fixture as opposed to having a stand-alone date.

"We want to go back to the glory days of the eighties when there were 500 horses in training here. I've seen it all come and go so it's quite heartening to see there are so many people fighting for it."

Harbour Law, who became Epsom's first Classic winner since 1969, will not be on show having returned to his owners since being ruled out for the rest of the season through injury.

Funds raised by the open day will go Epsom Racing Staff Welfare, now part of Racing Welfare, with adult tickets costing £7.50 and under 18s going free.
