Bint Dandy bidding to give injured Dwyer a timely tonic

Topweight Bint Dandy will try to put her best foot forward on her return to the all-weather, something her trainer Chris Dwyer is unable to do as he is recuperating from a nasty gallops accident.

The Newmarket trainer sustained a broken ankle and multiple rib fractures when a horse went over on him a week ago, but he is hoping to be well enough to attend the Essex track at the weekend.

He said: "I'll be out of action for at least five weeks and it's the ribs that are the worst. Thankfully, Silvestre de Sousa, who rides Bint Dandy for us, has been in to ride out for us.

"Bint Dandy likes Chelmsford and hopefully can give us something to cheer about.

"She's been finding it a bit tough on the turf of late so we're hoping going back to the all-weather can spark some improvement. Silvestre gets on well with her."

There are plenty of progressive types in opposition to Bint Dandy –who is the only course winner in the field – not least the Frankel filly Harba, a rare runner at the track for the superstar stallion.

Rare visitor

Charlie Appleby sends more horses to gallop at the Essex track than to run in races, and Song Maker will be just his eighth runner of the year at the course.

She came out of her win at Brighton in such good form we thought we'd give this a go under a penalty. The draw isn't the best but she doesn't have to lead and seems to act on the all-weather.

Veterans' day

A couple of veterans return from long layoffs at Beverley. The 11-year-old Ziggy Lee, who has had 361 days off the track since his last start, contests the Eddie and Violet Smith Conditions Stakes (3.50) at a course where he has a perfect 2-2 record.

Trainer Lawrence Mullaney said: "He's been a good horse for us and he's half decent – the only worry is I wanted the ground to dry out a bit. He'll need the run as he's 11 and there's only so much you can do with a horse of his age.

"He's got so much enthusiasm though –he's like a two-year-old. I wish I could bottle what he has and give it to some of the other horses! He's wonderful."

On the same card Kheskianto, also 11, is back after 315 days (406 since his last Flat start). He runs in the first division of the amateur riders' handicap (5.25), a race he won back in 2013.

Oh so close

Spare a thought for connections of Weellan, the John Quinn-trained juvenile who bids to get off the mark at the eighth time of asking in Beverley's 7½f novice event (2.45).

In seven starts he has finished second four times (and third twice) with the widest losing margin being just half a length. Last time out at Newcastle he went down by a short head to the Sir Mark Prescott-trained Codicil, who was making it four wins from four starts.

Sonne shines

The 3m1½f Weatherbys Racing Diaries Handicap Chase (3.30) is the feature event at Warwick and Sonneofpresenting bids to build on an excellent summer campaign during which he won three of four starts for trainer Kim Bailey. He's now off 135, 19lb higher for those wins.
