Palace Pier and Santa Barbara keep followers in the hunt with foreign forays

The majority of Tote Ten To Follow stables picked up points last week as the first and third most popular horses in the game rewarded followers with forays away from home turf.

Palace Pier, a component in 79.8 per cent of stables, was able to defend the Prix Jacques le Marois from the challenging Poetic Flare, who is still the second-highest points scorer in the competition after Snowfall.

John Gosden’s charge took his points tally to 107.33 with a 27.8 point addition at Deauville.

Earlier, the competition’s third most popular horse, Santa Barbara, representing 63.1 per cent of stables, bagged a second American Grade 1 and 28.1 points in the Beverly D Stakes at Arlington.

The third-biggest scorer of the week was Sacred in the Hungerford Stakes at Newbury. The William Haggas-trained filly sliced through the field to take the Group 2 prize and 27.6 points for five per cent of stables.

Also on the card, Mojo Star at last shed his maiden tag, earning 11.1 points for 0.3 per cent of stables.

It was a similarly smooth success in the Geoffrey Freer Stakes for Hukum, who made no mistake in landing back-to-back victories in the race to earn 1.5 per cent of stables 17.7 points.

The transfer window for the competition will remain open until 11am on Wednesday, just before the start of York’s Ebor festival.

It is an opportunity to discard underperformers and bring in fresh talent that might not have shown potential before the competition began.

New names have been added to the Ten To Follow list, including Goodwood winners Suesa and Baaeed, who have shown so much potential to become major points scorers in the second half of the season.

Suesa is among the leading contenders for Friday’s Nunthorpe Stakes as the York Ebor festival brings a host of points opportunities.

With Love deputising for St Mark’s Basilica in the next bonus race, the Juddmonte International, there are sure to be some hasty revisions to plans before the deadline.
