Thursday's cards at Newmarket and York have been hit with more than 20 non-runners after significant overnight rain eased the ground.

The going at Newmarket and York, which host eight races on ITV4 between them today, eased to good to soft at both courses this morning after overnight rain. At 11.45am there were 11 non-runners at Newmarket and 12 at York, with all but two blaming the ground.

The going for the opening day of Newmarket's July festival is now good to soft (from good) after a further 6.5mm of rain fell overnight. The July course hosts an eight-race card, headlined by the Group 2 Princess of Wales's Stakes (4.10).

York had 13mm of rain overnight and the going this morning was changed to good to soft, having been good, good to firm, 24 hours before. The Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Dante Stakes (3.15) is the feature contest at the Knavesmire.

Clerk of the course Anthea Morshead fears conditions may deteriorate through the afternoon. "We had 13mm of rain last night but it has been largely dry since 6am and the forecast suggests that is it for today," she said.

"It's sat in the top at the moment and it could get into the ground and make it softer as they race on it. But the ground is in great shape as it has not been raced in since last October."
